The beer industry produces a staggering 40 million tons of waste annually, a large portion of which comes from spent grain, known as Brewer’s Spent Grain (BSG). This byproduct is often discarded or given as animal feed, yet BSG has incredible potential as a valuable, nutritious ingredient for humans. The brewing process extracts much of the grain’s sugar content, leaving behind a fiber- and protein-rich grain, which can be ideal for human diets.

At Hops & Co, we produce premium flour from Brewer’s spent grain collected from our local partner brewery (BSG). With the help of our innovative machinery, we transform this spent grain into flour, which we then sell directly to our network of local partner bakeries. Our flour is very rich in nutrients, consisting of 70% lignocellulosic material, 20% proteins, and 10% lipids, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and phenolic compounds.

We are dedicated to building a company that embraces a business-to-business model, centered on partnerships. We aim to cultivate a connected local ecosystem of partners, including brewpubs, bakeries, cafes, and restaurants, that are all actively involved in the upcycling process. We seek to sell our premium-quality flour, derived from brewers’ spent grain, to bakeries in Rotterdam and thus establish an eco-conscious production network. Once our local network is established, we plan to expand further throughout Rotterdam and potentially on a national scale. This all facilitates a transition toward a more sustainable beer industry.
